Chrome Update #4: Ubuntu Dual Boot

Posted on 20:08 by Unknown
Using the "Easy" Method, I ran the script twice and BAM, Ubuntu dual boot.

It's nothing to brag about, I love having crossover installed and the fact that I have a FILE BROWSER ;D

The Bad:
The function (top) keys don't work, along with the search button and right clicking (which I only use two finger tap anyway - so no effect on me). Since there is no delete key, that obviously doesnt work and neither does Grub. I wish I could dual boot without code/flipping the switch. Last of my negative rants, the 3G doesn't work.

The Good, The Great And The Awesome:
But negatives aside, it provides a killer OFFLINE mode, the friendly and well known "desktop" and I have the ability to run more than just web apps. Bluetooth is also unlocked in Ubuntu. The media player works as well as skype and running through my external drive, games and CAD using crossover. Also, I love using dual screen functionality.

Lastly, the Chrome Application runs pretty damn amazing, as on any computer.

How to Post A Chrome Web Store App Without Owning The Underlying Site

Posted on 09:50 by Unknown
Now, this guide is for making temporary applications available to the public while the website you are trying to make an app for, makes one themselves.

Since I got tired of waiting for Gizmodo to post an app of their own, I made a Gizmodo Chrome App as an example.

To start, download my base app here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dnucf166lhf6m07
This will set you up with the correct layout and setup.

Once you open the manifest.json file, you will see this:

{
"name": "ENTER THE APP NAME HERE",
"description": "ENTER A QUICK DESCRIPTION OF THE APP HERE",
"version": "1.0",
"icons": { "16": "16.png",
          "128": "128.png" },
"app": {
"launch": {
"local_path": "NAME THIS HTML THE SAME AS YOUR APP NAME.html"
}
},
"permissions": [
"unlimitedStorage",
"notifications"
]
}

Pretty self explanatory. Next, open the HTML file and you will see this:

<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://YOUR SITE HERE.com">

Add your site and you're almost done!

Now get your own images that are 16x16 and 128x128 and name them 16.PNG and 128.PNG

Now rename "Base App" to your app name and right click it again. Select "Send To" and click "Compressed Folder"

Now visit this link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/developer/dashboard
and (If you didn't already) pay the 5 bucks and upload your app!

Trouble Moving to the Cloud? Here's Step 1: Music

Posted on 19:51 by Unknown
Most likely, you have iTunes and unless you listen to music straight out of an Amazonian Forest, most of your songs are already in the cloud (of Groove)

Note to Amazonians: Visit this link: http://retro.grooveshark.com/upload/

For all the rest of you Billboard Top 100 followers, visit this link: http://groovylists.com/?do=itunes
First, you need a XML of your playlists. To do so:
1. Double click iTunes
2. Wait patiently
3. Right click your playlist and save it as an XML on your desktop or somewhere
(Was that too fast?)

Now go to the site and upload it. If you can't figure the rest out, please send your CR48 back to Google at the following address:

Google Gives the OK to Hack Any Operating System, Directly

Posted on 07:10 by Unknown
On the Google Group, one ninja wrote:
"Developer channel (a.k.a. "dev channel")
Currently, by default, your Chrome notebook is on our beta channel, and is regularly updated with our beta version releases. Compared to the beta channel, the developer channel gets updated with versions of Chrome OS that may contain new features still being built, some of which may not always work as expected yet. Folks on the developer channel may also at times experience more instability (such as crashes). To find out about how to switch between the two channels, see here.

Developer mode (a.k.a. "dev mode")
While we try to make your Chrome notebook as secure and user-friendly as possible, at the same time we want to support developers who want to install their own builds of a Chromium-based operating system or another operating system and be able to tap into the full capabilities of our device. As such, we've implemented a physical developer on/off switch on your Chrome notebook that you can use to turn on developer mode and install your own OS. To find out how to switch between the two modes, see here."

An iPhone heat warmer, this time for real!

Posted on 14:28 by Unknown
This is no BS app that shows an image of a heater. This will make your iPhone warm and toasty in a matter of minutes!

How? Install Android on your iPhone (No computer required)
For the guide, visit this link: http://www.redmondpie.com/install-android-2.2.1-froyo-on-iphone-3g-2g-using-bootlace-in-cydia-no-computer-required/

Then boot iDroid and put the device into sleep (turn the screen off)
It will drain your battery so fast, but the warmth is so worth it. Give it a try!

Rant: Why American Radio Sucks

Posted on 21:10 by Unknown
So i'm sure you've heard those annoying HD radio ads lately... No commercials eh?
We shouldn't have commercials in general.

How can you get around that? Listen to high school radio stations. They take advantage of other stations by making fun of them.

A great example is one station, which says in between songs: "Broadcasting from a small hill on top of a football field, this is ____" and a little boy says "What kind of station is this?". In reply, the man says "Shut up little boy" and so on.

I have taken so much hatred for US stations that I often use Wunder Radio on my iPod to get international stations in Italy that I remember liking during my trip last summer, such as Radio Subasio. These European stations play mostly all American music while adding a little bit of local culture and maybe a nice local deal or two every hour or so.

Try it out :D

Chrome Notebook Update #2

Posted on 12:06 by Unknown
Things I would like to be changed:

I decided to try dual screen functionality on my CR48
What happens? Both screens show the same thing, useful if you are using a projector.
I hope to see an update soon.

Next I tried uploading photos from an SD card
The slideshow would not show a single picture from my camera and instead, it showed a black screen.

Other then that, I have not seen any other glitches. I have also found a case that fits the CR48 so well, it was if it was made for the laptop.

Surprisingly to many of you, and myself, I have not hit the ever so tempting switch. Mostly because I am still not allowed

The forum has been very lively and I am very proud to be a part of it.
I have posted some suggestions for features here:
Google Goggles for the CR48-https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/chrome-notebook-pilot/YzGEXu7BU2c
Facial Recognition as a login- https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/chrome-notebook-pilot/QTYUDWlX_X0

Thank you ever so much Google for the 700 emails at 3 AM this morning...

Posted on 05:57 by Unknown
Finally, the official chrome notebook Google Group was created,  awkwardly early in the morning, today.

Everyone who was added to the group, including myself, is slowly waking up to find their emails jam packed with emails.

If you have to rid yourself of the hundreds more to come is to log onto Google Groups: http://groups.google.com and click on the group in the sidebar. Then click "Edit my Membership" to change settings.

I'm glad to see Google directly requesting feedback instead of allowing people to openly sell them and think they won't have to do anything

*This group has 25960 members so don't worry if it is legit.*

The greetings email, which I had to rip through my email to find:

"Hi all,
My name is Jess. I'm a product specialist on Chrome noteboo
ks and also going to be one of your Google Guides. I'm hoping to learn more about the different ways you use your Cr-48s - personally, mine has been indispensable as both a coffee table computer and cross-country companion.

The Gorilla in the picture is somewhat of a mascot for our cube so I very much appreciate his advice from time to time. ;)

Jess"

Chrome Notebook Update #1

Posted on 14:06 by Unknown
My first notices, Google's sarcasm and humor in every sheet of paper they include.

Click the images to see a better view and to read this well thought safety instructions. Hopefully though, you'll be lucky enough to read it in person.

Next off, I enjoyed reading through the beginner's guide to a CR48. The tech sarcasm continued in the "There is no CAPS lock button" page.

Moving on from there, it was quick to find the few annoyances of the laptop:
A: The trackpad
B: The boot time (JK)
C: The lack of a delete key

However, I quickly figured out that there is no need for the trackpad buttons at all. To scroll, two finger slide. To click, tap. To right click, two finger tap.

When I looked into the delete button, It was revealed that you could delete by hitting alt backspace, which is the only annoyance that has yet to be worked around.

I think that is a sufficient amount of debugging for now, so on with the pluses!
I think it's clear what the great features of this computer are so I won't discuss them very thoroughly.

Highest rating- ✓++
Lowest rating-X

Battery: ✓++ -I can't even compare it to my 30 minute battery life old laptop...
Wifi: ✓++ -Reaches further then my old laptop
Speed: ✓++ Duhh
Bootup: ✓++
Offline mode: X
3G: ✓++
Device Name and Company Enjoyability & Sarcasm: ✓++
Difficulty for new users: ✓++ -None (With one exception.... The SD card slot was very difficult for me to figure out that you had to push in and it would come out)

I will continue to update from jcoinster.blogspot.com/cr48

Google, the CR48 Hype is a curse...

Posted on 18:56 by Unknown
Ok, Seemingly normal Dell Mini right? WRONG

Ever since I hopped aboard the Cr48 hype, my Dell Mini has basically fallen off a cliff.

What's wrong with it beginning after December 7th?

This:
  • I am typing on that iPhone. It is my only keyboard now since the laptop's is ruined.
  • My battery went from 3 and a half hours to a half hour
  • I installed Heexeh's Chrome to get wifi and now since the keyboard is messed up, I can't log in
  • I am forced to use an ubuntu live CD to get remote desktop set up.
  • I lost my power cord and am forced to use a power adapter from an early 1990's laptop
  • The power adapter doesn't quite fit, so I have to keep the cord across my laptop to keep it touching the connector.
Update:
My iPhone touch screen stopped working and my new headphones broke, at least my CR48 is doing A-OK!

Why is Internet Explorer so slow? It may be because of Bing

Posted on 08:51 by Unknown
Quote from the official Google Blog:
"As we see it, this experiment confirms our suspicion that Bing is using some combination of:
  • Internet Explorer 8, which can send data to Microsoft via its Suggested Sites feature
  • the Bing Toolbar, which can send data via Microsoft’s Customer Experience Improvement Program"
Now think about it. How could Internet Explorer be so slow unless it is sending tons of information back to Microsoft to add as search results to Bing.

My suggestion: Chrome

Neat freak? You missed a spot. Right there, in your computer.

Posted on 20:17 by Unknown
Why should you should keep your computer off the ground? This is why!

Over as little as a year, computers can build up a shocking amount of dust. Why? Most of them are on the floor. Most people would never think to clean theirs.

Here are some pictures to gross you out.

Before:                  Click the image for a better view.                 After:

*Note: I take no responsibility for encouraging you to open up your computer. It is very delicate and remember: DON'T PULL THAT LEVER. When I was younger, I pulled a lever, releasing the CPU. When I carelessly tried to put it back, it was too late.*

Imagine the world without Bing Search. Wait, NOTHING would change

Posted on 16:30 by Unknown
You know why? Because Bing is stealing Google's search results and denying it! If Bing was shut down, NO ONE would care other then the Microsoft employees who created it. NO ONE would go: "where's bing?" with a frown on their face. That's because Bing search is an emulated Google! And those would-be sad people would go right to google.com.

Face it Microsoft, GIVE UP. Not just on Bing, eventually, Chrome OS will replace computers in workplaces, Microsoft will be lower then linux one day.

Don't believe me? Look:

Because everyone searches juegosdeben1ogrande every night....
