The most entertaining free PC Game: Bridge Builder

Posted on 20:42 by Unknown
I know it may not be the best graphics, but I have spent hours fiddling with the best bridge for the cheapest price.

Just think: It's better to screw a bridge on a computer, for fun or not, then to hurt someone in the real world.

Easiest way to publish your blog on facebook and twitter

Posted on 21:30 by Unknown
Twitter:
The easiest way for twitter is definitely http://twitterfeed.com/ just make an account and follow the steps.
Facebook:
You could use the same site as the twitter site but Facebook keeps changing their code. Instead, follow this:

The question I have wondered for years: Why do companies make mouses so loud?!

Posted on 21:16 by Unknown
Have you ever been on the computer at some obscure hour and with every click you feel like you're either going to A: Wake someone up, B: Piss them off. Regardless of the reason, we accept the noise because it is such a precedent with all mice.

Well, not all. For example: The Magic Mouse.
Then there's the trackpad, which still never solved the problem on certain computers.

Don't even get me started with keyboards... Some modern keyboards are as loud as my Apple IIC.

How bad was Vista? Let's find out.

Posted on 13:13 by Unknown
Recently, someone gave me a pretty nice looking Dell Inspiron 530S to fix it's extremely slow setup.

I immediately realized you need a keyboard (See why) and that it takes 5 minutes to startup:

Besides that being extremely annoying, that's not much of a problem. Then I noticed the shutdown time, which should be a few seconds. Instead, I timed it to 8 minutes, 50 seconds!

After CCleaner, Malaware Bytes, Speed My PC, and updated hardware drivers and bios, I realized this computer needed much more then just that.

I backed everything up and did a fresh install of not Vista, but Windows 7. I myself am a linux and Mac addict but it was not my computer. Now, the computer runs at perfect speeds for it's amount of ram. I ordered RAM and it will be just like new, actually better!

The amount of sites who stalk you is increasingly scary...

Posted on 17:56 by Unknown
If you use Google Chrome, which is the best browser in case you live in a hole, you can block all of these scary sites yearning for information on you:
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/jeoacafpbcihiomhlakheieifhpjdfeo

Here is a perfect example: Gizmodo.com. Innocent right? I have seen up to 17 trackers. In this image, it only found 10.

Edit: Another site shows 30 trackers!

In the extension's description, it shows an image with 21 trackers.

Dell BIOS Fail

Posted on 20:41 by Unknown
Ok, so I don't have a keyboard at the moment, so what right? WRONG. Dell apparently thinks you need one at all times and there is no possible way that a computer could ever have a virtual keyboard or anything

Better yet, Dell decided to not have a timer on such problem but require you to press a key! Are you kidding me?

Nice one dell.

An Ubuntu error so crazy, you might think you're on Windows

Posted on 14:28 by Unknown
I would expect to see something that looks similar to this on a Windows machine, not on my beloved Ubuntu Netbook.

The error that appeared when I plugged in my iPhone said:

"Unable to mount James' iPhone"

"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

"Device 'James' iPhone' is password protected. Enter the password on the device and click 'Try again'."

Yes my iPhone has a password but this was a little over the top.

Great Idea! Lets walk to Target alongside a highway!

Posted on 13:07 by Unknown
1. Why would someone go to a store and not bring anything to carry here items in it? (Ex: Car, motorcycle, etc)
2. Why would that person need Google Maps to go to the local Target
3. Who does that?

A woman actually listened to Google Maps to walk along a highway.
Now, she's suing both Google and the person who hit her while she was, get ready for this, WALKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.

FRC Minibot 2011

Team 263, Sachem Robotics' Prototype and deployment

The new bot has two motors, the second is attached to the smaller wheel. Since it has a 2:1 gear ratio, the smaller wheel goes twice the speed.

The last trial runs were:
2.9 - 3.1 range
  • There are no magnets other then the ones inside the motors :D
  • There is ghetto wiring currently installed on the bot and there has not been any programming set on the controller yet.
  • When the power is manually cut at the top of the pole, it slowly goes back down the pole.
  • It is very picky of it's center of gravity. The bot will fall off the pole if a wheel is too far in.
  • The wheels were shaved down to the shape of the pole, as well as adding grip to it.
Here is a video of early stages of deployment

I wanted to do something unique for my CR48 application. So I wrote a letter

Posted on 18:31 by Unknown

Here is what I came up with:

To whom it may concern,

On behalf of the recent events Google Inc....
Just Kidding. I can tell this company has a good sense of humor and that it is not necessary to write in such a formal way. I am writing this letter because I have taken much interest in the Google Notebook since day one and I would like to submit an application in more personal way. I'm writing this letter on a computer that has already restarted at random occurrences twice, and I have only just begun. Luckily for me, I am writing this using Google Docs.
By submitting this application, I would like to admit who I am. I am the blogger from the website jcoinster.blogspot.com. My website has gained over 10,000 views from my CR48 post, more then my new small-town site has ever seen. I even earned a whole 10 cents in adsense money and cannot wait until I cash those cents for a new gumball. Oh wait. Gumballs cost 5X that much. Anyway, I have followed the drama, all 200 pages on slickdeals, the Chrome facebook page, all 120 comments on my website, all the @cr48 tweets and to be honest, I have enjoyed myself for, it was as if I was watching a reality game show.

I have a few questions that I think you or your coworkers may be able to answer.
Why you did not send emails as a verification?
Why you kept a non first come first serve form basis?
Did you really accomplish much from sending these laptops with open arms?
How many of the 15,000 individuals that received them actually give you feedback?
How many were just sold on eBay to people who really would have shown dedication?
How many people who got the laptop used the basic form, giving little to no useful information?
How many people did you track online with intentions of banning or blacklisting if that even exists in your standards?

Hmm, this letter seems awfully similar to a certain post on a blog I once saw. Now that I have shoved a few questions down your throat, I would like to reveal my most important question: why don't I have one! As much as that question is absolutely true, my actual question is: how come most of the people who spent most of their time devoted toward getting one of these laptops, such as Addicted-Gamer, the one behind the tracker, have not gotten one?
The least I would like to get from this application is the fact of knowing you have posted this letter on your cork board, gotten a giggle out of reading it, or simply the thought of knowing that this was read.

Now that you have read this application, just imagine what my reaction would be if I open a CR48 and see a personalized letter right inside. Hey, people can dream right?
Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
[My real name here]

Easiest way to root a Nook Color (Update: May 2011!)

Posted on 19:20 by Unknown
Update! The Market now comes WITH your Nook!

When I first got my hands on a Nook Color: BORING!
I don't understand why any company would spend a large sum of money for a tablet that they would limit it's functionality to only eBooks, suduko and the web.  To make it all better, they added a full accelerometer to it with no more function then to change orientation!

Meanwhile, some great people knew it could do more. They got an unlocked version of Android on the thing. Here's how to do it without any hassle:

Everyone on Facebook, shut up about the Zodiac signs

Posted on 20:42 by Unknown
According to a recent report, WHAT YOU SEE IS TRUE. A team of scientist have recalculated the signs

"Astronomers have restored the original Babylonian zodiac by recalculating the dates that correspond with each sign to accommodate millennia of subtle shifts in the Earth's axis." -Meaning Facebook, as hard as it is to believe, is telling the truth. Now go worry about paying the bills and feeding your kids.

The new dates are as follows:
"Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus:* Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

* Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year."
- That's the best part: "You all: You aren't important to us and no one likes you, so we excluded you from our new Zodiac game."

Facebook CEO and creator, Mark Zuckerberg has a house that I could afford.

Note: Some people are a BIT too stalkerish with some of the photos.

"Zuckerberg's new house, which is another rental, is slightly larger than his previous place. It has five bedrooms and around 3,800 square feet, according to internet listings, versus four bedrooms and around 2,350 square feet for the old place. No fewer than three satellite dishes are attached the roof. Out in front, you'll find Zuckerberg's black Acura... Along with a new security system of course." -Gawker

While homelessness is in the headlines, meet Stovepipe

Posted on 12:18 by Unknown
While not all homeless people are famous, many aren't sad either. Every year when I go camping I pass a small town in VT called Brattleboro. There, a homeless man lives in a tent, with a Stovepipe for heat, along the railroad. He tells many stories of how he was a stock broker in NYC and so on. The people support him and his simple life. I love to hear stories, and this man had plenty. I said goodbye and I was on my way. Some people are quiet but they are screaming with great stories, just waiting for you to hear them.

How 15 bucks helped me save 400 on a new laptop, spoken from an ex-busted laptop!

Posted on 11:44 by Unknown
A while back, I posted a blog post from the same laptop, suffering water damage: http://jcoinster.blogspot.com/2010/10/9ott-9ob5v3e-3ey9o4r-0p4r9o3en6m.html

Finally, I can say that this laptop is fixed and working just as it did before, only with about an hour less battery life...

To recap the story and update it:

Someone used I a bit too much water while cleaning her laptop.
The first thing I did was make sure only the keyboard was damaged and then called the manufacturer.
Upon calling, the support, the man told me it would be about 50-70 dollars for a new keyboard.
Upon me calling that crazy, I hung up.

So I went to Amazon and searched the replacement number on the back. Low and behold, it came up for 15 bucks.
I ordered it, got it in the mail and when I opened it did not find the right keyboard, my luck.
A quick email and a few days later, a resend and retrieval, the right one arrived.

Today, here I stand knowing I saved someone 400 dollars and my reward: Brutally crushing the old keyboard

Proof that fighting back is sometimes better: My quest to gain 10 points back from Yahoo Answers

Posted on 18:22 by Unknown
Here I am minding my own business trying to help a few people out before their question on Yahoo Answers closes and I get an email from Yahoo. Usually it's about getting "Voted best answer" but today was a bit different.

In the email, they said the following message:
"You have posted content to Yahoo! Answers in violation of our Community Guidelines orTerms of Service. As a result, your content has been deleted and 10 points have been deducted from your points total...

Question: Need help with a computer virus?
Deleted Answer: Get a Mac
Violation Reason: Misuse of the question and answer format

In Yahoo! Answers you must phrase questions in question format....
If you feel this content was removed in error...."
My Objection:
Although this answer may not be a very practical and cheap solution to the question, it still proves a valid point that this is a possible and good choice of action in the future and possibly sooner.

And a few hours later, a message arrives stating:
"Upon review, we found that the following answer was not in violation of the Answers Community Guidelines or Yahoo! Terms of Service. The Yahoo! Answers Team regrets that your answer was wrongfully reported by the Answerscommunity. Your answer has been reposted to Yahoo! Answers, and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."
They were so sorry that they sent me another message saying:

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Answers Customer Care. We have reviewed your appeal request. Upon review, we found that your content was not in violation of the Yahoo! Answers Community Guidelines, Yahoo! Community Guidelines, or the Yahoo! Terms of Service. Your content has been reposted to Yahoo! Answers, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Answers Customer Care.

Feel free to look at the full question here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110103174328AAgwitO

This just goes to show:
If you don't speak up sometimes, you allow others to do that for you.

How the internet can change a person's life, smack out of homelessness

Posted on 14:55 by Unknown

This was Ted Williams shortly before a complete transformation.
He was a homeless person in Ohio.
Notice the "was".
What is he now?
The Susan Boyle of the streets.

Gifted with a talent, he spoke as if he was a news reporter into a passing camera in a car. After that video In little to no time, became a hit, according to Gawker he has been offered jobs from:
"WBNS-TV has asked Williams to narrate promotional spots for its "One Day to End Homelessness" telethon.
The Ohio Credit Union League presented him with $10,000 in exchange for voice-over work.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have offered him a full-time job and a house.
And the list continues to grow as emails flood in."

This all proves to show how much the internet can change people's lives. In less then one month, all through one post, I have gotten over 10,000 hits from one post that was passed around by the virtual word of mouth. All you need is a talent, a message, a tip, hint, guide, anything that is funny, entertaining, informative or even true to your heart. It seems this man experienced the same thing. There's only one difference: He did it on a larger scale!

Rant: Wollmans Rink Rules

Posted on 09:52 by Unknown
After skating at this rink for years, I just noticed a new rule: No skating backwards.

Are you kidding me? I understand no weaving, which everyone does anyway, but you can't go backwards? What is this!
